Askania-Werke Magnetometer
Askania-Werke
Method: Magnetics
Description
This German built Askania Variograph records long period geomagnetic variations. It houses three independent optical systems for the three magnetic field components using mirrors mounted on small magnets. After careful levelling, orientation and calibration, it records the three components on film at the rate one inch per hour. After a few days, the film box is extracted and sent to a lab to be developed.
Instruments of this type were designed and used by D I Gough for his famous geomagnetic induction survey of southern Africa in the ~1970's and 80's. Gough carried out similar work in Alberta and Saskatchewan when he went to the University of Alberta.
