Extreme Geophysics – Exploring the Pyramids

Dr Jan Francke - Extreme Geophysics

Abstract:
Join geophysicist Dr Jan Francke for a captivating evening exploring how geophysics β€” particularly Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) β€” has been used to uncover secrets beneath some of the world's most iconic sites. From the Great Pyramid of Giza to Chichen Itza and beyond, this talk blends real science with remarkable discovery, whilst taking a light-hearted look at a century of radar myths and treasure-hunting misadventures.

Biography:
Jan thinks he knows a little bit about ground penetrating radar. Having a BSc, MSc and PhD all in deep GPR applications, he’s spent the last 35+ years trying to figure out where GPR works and how to make sense of the confusing wiggly pictures it produces. He creates custom GPR instruments for the mining, security, and space sectors, and he is a co-founder of Geolitix. He has conducted GPR surveys in 108 countries and has more frequent flyer miles than the airlines themselves. He now conducts lectures and workshops globally on managing expectations around GPR technology.
