The well is a long way from the structural high but close to the OWC.hydrocarbon exploration and the energy business. Reading through the programme you would think that exploration is in a good state, with what I regard as the best technical papers in several years. There are presentations on the Pluto, West Erregulla and West Barracouta fields and the Exmouth Platform, McArthur, Carnarvon, Cooper, Otway and Perth basins. It is a well-rounded and diverse selection with something to appeal to everyone. But there are also more environmentally focussed topics in the programme, such as passive seismic acquisition, which requires no damaging seismic source, uncertainty calculations to predict the extent of fracturing, and the use of tracers to map connectivity between shallow aquifers. But my view is that carbon capture and sequestration and hydrogen will be the main topics of discussion, with renewable energy and zero emission technology taking a prominent role in many sessions.Table 1.APPEA conference trends Going up- Renewables - Carbon capture and sequestration - Hydrogen - Machine learningGoing down- conventional exploration - full time employment Figure 2.Six years later the mapping is less smooth and shows the Kingfish-1 well located a long way down dip.JUNE 2022 PREVIEW 38'
